Lord Huron and Trampled by Turtles are on tour together, making one of their last few stops in Seattle. They performed at Seattle’s finest performing arts venue, the Paramount Theatre. This Seattle landmark is located downtown; very near the Capitol Hill neighborhood which is great for us! Ashley and I have seen plenty of shows there over the past few years. They included some of the most famous comedians such as Aziz Ansari, Jim Gaffigan, and Brian Regan. We’ve also seen Old Crow Medicine Show, which is one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended. In addition, Ashley has seen touring musicals such as Dirty Dancing and Wicked.
The full photo galleries for both bands are at the end of this post. I’ve also included notes about my camera gear at the bottom if you’re interested.
Trampled by Turtles
The concert was this past Friday, August 19. Trampled by Turtles opened the show. This was our third time seeing them as they’ve been to Seattle a couple times in the past few years.
It was a fairly low-key performance and the band performed many of their slower songs. I won’t lie, but I was a little bored. They lived up to the “turtles” name quite well. Perhaps I’m suffering from a Turtles overdose as I’ve been to two of their other shows recently and hear their music on Pandora almost daily. Don’t get me wrong; they are an extremely talented group of musicians. You may check out their video to one of their more popular (and faster) songs, Wait So Long, to get an idea of their sound.
If you’re into Americana music and are unfamiliar with the band, I definitely recommend checking them out. They have released eight full albums with the most recent, Wild Animals, released in June 2014.
After an hour set from the Turtles, Lord Huron took the stage to thunderous applause. The band immediately established the tone by playing some really fun and fast numbers. This was the first time I had seen Lord Huron and was not disappointed. The band was incredibly polished and played together seamlessly. The band has only released two full albums, but both are excellent. You may stream both using any one of the music streaming apps.
The band is also known for their interesting music videos, many of which are based on the novels of George Ranger Johnson. What makes this author so special? He doesn’t exist. The band made up the author and his novels to use the “stories” in their music videos. I love it! The entire concept, from the fake author to the execution of the videos, shows creativity and originality in a world of overly-corporate music videos.

All photos were taken with the Panasonic Lumix GX85 and the Panasonic 45-175mm lens. This proved an effective combination as I was sitting in the balcony and needed a zoom lens. However, using a tripod was not an option, so the in-body image stabilization of the GX85 came in handy. I set the exposure to automatic and then used the exposure compensation dial to turn it down between 1/3 and 1 1/3 stops to create the results you’re seeing. Focus was a mix of automatic and manual depending on the quality of light on stage. Overall, I’m very impressed with this camera and I’m extremely pleased with my purchase. Highly recommended!
